Pros and Cons of the Acer Aspire One AOD257-13685 10.1-Inch Netbook

Netbooks are mainly dislike because of processor limitations and small keyboards, but it is still worth to take a look at the Acer Aspire One AOD257-13685 because of the cheap price. In this post I will write Pros and Cons of the Acer Aspire One AOD257-13685

So, as meant in the title, here are the PRO's

Lightweight. Sub 3 pounds with 6 cell battery and barely over 2 with standard 3 cell
Thin. I swear it can't be more than an inch thick
250GB HDD instead of the usual 160GB
Oddly quiet. I have to strain to hear the fan running most of the time. Usually netbooks are noisy and even the HDD is quiet in this unit
Wireless includes N. Most stop at G.
It can sense with the power connector is loose and will beep to let you know it's not connected all the way (but only if the connector is still making partial contact).
Dual core processor with hyperthreading is unique. Most stop with just the dual core and leave it at that
DDR3 RAM, although limited to 1GB, is sufficient for the tasks I've put it through
Unique cover design
Solid construction with no creaking or cracking and limited screen flex
Decent performance, especially video
Cheap compared to tablets that are taking over the market. $240 for an ultraportable is nearly unheard of and a similar computer just 10 years ago from Dell or the like would have set you back $2,000.
Keyboard that is actually pleasurable to use. I rarely had a mistype.
Mouse/trackpad with the same pinch and squeeze features found on Apples. At least Acer got away from previous designs with the buttons on the side. While these finger movements may seem minor, they do come in handy for when screen print is small.

Not everything is perfect and there are CONS:

Bottom firing speakers mean tinny and muffled sound
Even Acer is confused with this model. The website states it's a single core model when it's actually dual core (and, yes, I did get the right model variation).
No HDMI port for those desiring such nor is there Bluetooth capability
Changing RAM or hard drive requires the removal of 6 screws on the bottom (2 of which are covered by the rubber feet), removal of the keyboard, yet another 6 screws and a metal plate. Screw any of these up and you're out of luck.
Quirky battery life, at least with 3 cell. Prone to dropping a half hour after just a couple minutes use so it's really difficult to gauge when you need to find an outlet or call it quits.
The two right side USB ports and next to each other. Fat dongles need not apply
Surefire fingerprint magnet on the cover although keyboard surfaces are roughly finished
Incredible amount of bloatware including anti-virus and Microsoft Office trials plus 22 Acer games that had to be removed.
Have over 250MB of online updates waiting in the pipes?
Watching videos turns up the heat to the point the bottom is really hot. Since most of the vents are bottom firing you can see where this presents problems. Adding the bulk of the 6 cell battery elevated the rear end and kept the heat done somewhat.

Overall, I give this unit a high rating but those interested might want to act quickly. Netbooks are a dying breed and may be replaced by tablets in the near future (might also explain with the prices are dropping, too).

The HP Pavilion DV6-2162NR is basically the same notebook as the previous models with a new CPU/graphics combo that greatly improves performance. Like the previous DV6 generation it is well constructed with a metallic toned black exterior (HP also offers versions in white). Take a good look at the shell art since it is something that may not appeal to everyone. I bought mine for my mother-in-law and she definitely appreciated having something a little more individual than the usual dull grey exterior. Despite the glossy exterior we haven't noticed much in the way of finger prints or any scratches despite the helping hands of our kids who love to "help" grandma with her computer.

The specs for this model are set well above what the average home owner needs today which (in my mind) future proofs it nicely. If you are on a tight budget you can get what you need for less (look at the HP Pavilion G60 line). If you have a little bit more to spend and you want some headroom to handle your computing needs for the next few years this is a great choice.

CPU - This is one of the first models from HP that sports Intel's new "Core i5" line of CPUs. The short version is that it outperforms the older "Core2" chips and is slightly better than the (also) new "Core i3" chips. As noted in the description it's 2.26GHz part that can "Turbo Boost" up to 2.53GHz. What isn't mentioned is that this is a dual core part with 3MB of cache. That may sound a lot like the old Core2 chips but don't be fooled: this chip will outperform the old Core2 by 20%-50%. If you are trying to decide between the "Core i5" and "Core i3" I would recommend the Core i5 to gamers and people who run high end applications (like CAD software) and the Core i3 for people running business applications (like MS Office) and web browsing. If you want to know more read on. If nerd stuff bores you then just trust me, this is a great chip to have in your laptop.

Okay here is why the Core i5 is a big deal: The Core i5 (and Core i3) have Intel's newest, fastest and smallest CPU core (also known as the "Westmere" core) which is two generations newer than the "Penryn" core used in the Core2 line. Because with each generation the parts get smaller they get cheaper to make. Also with the Westmere core Intel has bundled the chipset and a new graphics chip onto one package which also reduces cost (and allows Intel to do some new and cool performance tricks). One thing the Core i3 and i5 have that Core2 does not is "hyperthreading." Hyperthreading is a feature that makes two CPUs act like four. To do this Intel has enabled each CPU core to act on two software threads at once. So the two CPU Core i5 is almost as good as a four CPU part for a lot less money and requiring a lot less power (there are a few four core mobile CPUs out there but the battery life is terrible and I don't recommend them). Hyperthreading is something that every user can benefit from: no more watching your computer slow to a crawl because your anti-virus kicked in. Windows 7 just dumps that off on a new thread and you keep humming along surfing the web or playing a game. The main difference between the Core i3 and i5 is that the Core i5 has "Turboboost" (which can speed up your CPU or the graphics chip as needed) and the Core i3 does not. If you aren't stressing the CPU or the graphics chip then the Turboboost found in the i5 isn't going to do a lot for you.

Google Android on a HP Netbook

From the looks of it, HP basically took the second-generation Mini 110 netbook, customized the right mouse button, and slapped Google's Android operating system on it. It runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor and has 512MB if RAM, and a 16GB internal Flash drive. Every other feature is reminiscent of a netbook, including the 10-inch widescreen, 1,024-by-600 resolution, card reader, and 28WH battery (3-cell).

More intriguing is what will HP will do in the tablet space, now that we know it has a device that runs on basically the same parts as the Apple iPad. The Airlife 100 will be available only in Europe for now. There's no word on pricing or when it'll be available in the United States.

Atom N450 Netbooks at 2010

Arrival of next-gen Atom chips the N450, will have a great impact next year.

Search for netbooks on Amazon.com and you'll notice that for all the different models you can buy, the specs are mostly the same: 10.1-inch screen, 160GB hard drive, 1GB DDR2 of memory, and a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor. If you're willing to spend the money, you can upgrade to 2GB ram and a 1.66GHz Atom N280, but that's about it.

Manufacturers signed an agreement with Intel to hold off on releasing netbook based on the new Atom lineup.All of the major netbook players (Acer, Asus, Lenovo, and MSI) are set to launch their line of more powerful Atom N450 based netbooks next year on the month of January.

We will expect1.83GHz Atom N470 including 2GB of RAM which will set a new standard of netbook specs. Despite the processing power upgrade, these processors may still not be enough to handle HD video playback, the litmus test for small gadgets nowadays. A pairing of Nvidia's Ion graphics technology with the Atom N450/N470 may still be needed before you can get your HD video on the go, but no such hardware is planned for release.

Nvidia Ion on Asus Eee PC?

Asus just released information about Eee PC 1201n with Nvidia ION platform inside. The netbook has a 12-inch screen, slightly larger than the netbook form factor. Asus is yet to officially announce this netbook.

Asus Eee PC 1201n supports 720p HD content and have specificaton such as 1.6GHz Intel Atom processors, up to 2GB memory, 250GB SATA 5400RPM HDD, WiFi (802.11 b/g/n), Bluetooth and Ethernet. Also, a 1.3 megapixel webcam comes built-in.

The graphic processor is the sepcial feature here. Installed in the netbook is Nvidia ION. With Nvidia's legacy GeForce 9400M graphics chip, the netbook is capable of playing 1080p HD content and supports other Nvidia technologies like PureVideo HD, PhysX and CUDA.

With a 6-cell battery, Eee PC 1201n netbook claims up to 11 hours battery life. Eee PC 1201n will come pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium. You will have to wait the launch around October to see this product actually come to the market!

Kohjinsha 4,8-inch touchscreen netbook

There are plenty newcomers in the netbook or mini notebook products range, one of them is Elonex with the product called Elonex Webbook. Elonex, for you who never heard it before is a company founded in 1986 to offer computer and related IT services direct to customers allowing them to exercise more control and benefit from improved flexibility.

Anyway enough for Elonex introduction, let's look at their product the Elonex Webbook. This product is probably created for consumers who wants a different look or feel for a netbook. Although the specs is just the same as other netbooks. Starting from the Intel Atom N270 processor, 1 Gigabyte RAM, and Intel 945GSE chipset with the usual onboard GMA 950.

Looking to the picture, we can see what differentiate this product from others is the design that looks like the MacBook Pro. They sell a white keyboard version of the Webbook, and if you look at it, it really looks like a Macbook!

Observing the design, this Webboook from Elonex looks like a little bit heavier than the usual netbook.

One important thing I noticed is that the battery is permanently installed to the netbook. It is possible to open because screws exist and should be able to open but inside it looks like the is cable soldered to the netbook.

The performance of this netbook is standard. Now as a conclusion, people who are going to buy it must decide from the price tag.

Recently I found out that since yesterday (4th September 2009), my blog didn't appear in search engine result especially Google. Previously this blog (Netbook Reviewer) has been in second place of Google SERP on the keyword of Netbook Reviewer. Anybody got the same experience?

I guess It was because I was using frequently Entrecard the past weeks with 300 drops a day using Voice of Bragg dropping tool, so don't be shocked if this new blog could have a high increase of Alexa Rank.

Samsung X120 "CULV Netbook"

Samsung is introducing the X120, an ultra thin 11.6 inch laptop. Because of its small size some people considered it to be an over-sized netbook but if you look at the specs of this computer, this laptop capability is very much higher than the usual netbooks.

X120 has a Core 2 Duo or Pentium processor with CULV technology, up to 4GB of RAM, a hard drive with a capacity of up to 500GB, and GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics.

Although it is not yet released, the tech consumers will savvy this 11.6-inch machine because it also has a top screen resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, a 3-in-1 card reader, a webcam, 10/100 LAN, WiFi and optional Bluetooth, and a 4- or 6-cell battery, the latter lasting up to nine hours on one charge.

The X120 is expected to become available this month with a quite sensitive price tag is about $900, but considering the technology it has, of course people who wants more from netbooks will choose this product.

The Samsung N130 and N140 Netbook

Samsung recently updated their netbook products with the launch of a couple of new models, the Samsung N130 and N140, which feature a 10.1 inch LCD display.

Both of these new netbooks comes with an Intel Atom 1.6GHz Atom processor, and Intel GMA 950 graphics, plus 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive.

The N140 comes with Bluetooth 2.1, stereo 1.5w speakers and SRS audio, plus it features a higher powered battery which is supposed to last for 11 hours, as opposed to 7 hours on the N130.

The Blurry Line Betweeen Netbooks and Notebooks

The distinction between the Netbook and the Notebook can be considered blurry because of the development on both categories.

Advancement in notebooks recently are the development of thin and light notebooks with consumer ultra-low voltage (CULV) processors. This is an advantage in order to make smaller notebooks.The size of notebooks could reanch around 11 inch screen sized netbooks.

On otherwise the Netbook, which is defined as a machine with its small keyboard, small screen, and lack of an optical drive will certainly compete with notebooks which is getting thinner and sell roughly for the same price.

It's clear this is mostly arbitrary. If there were a technical definition Netbooks would have been defined as something with a much smaller screen, at least as small as 7 inches, and a more expensive starting price.

Samsung N510 Netbook Release on September 2009

The combination of Atom Processors and NVIDIA ION GPU in netbooks is probably the recent trend and recently reported that these kind of netbooks will show up in the US in the form of Samsung N510.

The recent report from Liliputing.com claimed that the Samsung N510,will be around in September 2009. The ability of this netbook is very advance, it will have a HDMI out and able to play Blue Ray. Reports are not confirmed whether this product will come out with an optical drive.

This beefed up netbook in theory will have a similar graphic power compared to the Ge Force 9400 M, and this is very good news for gamers. Price of the Samsung N510 is reported to be around $599.

The downside is probably due to the battery life and this may push away netbook consumers. As a gaming machine, it is still questioned but I guess a lot of folks out there need a machine like the Samsung N510 to fulfill their mobile gaming activity, especially those online 3d MM0RPG such as Warcraft Online.

The consumers then mus decide whether they aim for the cost, or rather have a graphically-boosted Netbook, a thin-and-light, or a budget laptop with a better core processor?

Sony launched its P-Series Lifestyle PC in January. It is an 8-inch laptop computer that competes or maybe succeeds the netbook-level computers. It is very small so it could suit in to a wallet. Very compact sized form factor.

This computer doesn't fit in to a netbook, a laptop or a tablet category. It is already August but the P-Series already went to a price drop.

When it appeared, reviewers were keen on the P-Series’ form factor but less so on its sluggish hardware and its almost $2,000 price tag.This is probably why it lacked on sales.

NVIDIA Will Release ION LE Graphic Processor

Nvidia has introduced a new Ion integrated graphics processor which is called the Ion LE. This chip is an entry-level netbook graphics chip that will only support up to DirectX 9. The chip competes in the low price graphic chip market while still providing great performance compared to Intel’s 945GSE chipset and GN40 part.

Netbooks are meant to be low cost, and NVIDIA's decision is on the track. However, the technology would probably have a short life because in the future it couldn't run any OS higher than Windows XP.

The news broke out that Acer and ASUS, two major companies that are well known for its netbook series, are said to halt the development of new netbooks in the second half of 2009. The decision according to Digitimes is related to the Intel’s move in delaying the launch of the Pine Trail-M platform up until Q1 2010.

The two companies will probably now be focusing on the thin and light notebook segment using Intel’s CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) processors while the Atom CPUs would probably be not further developed.

People who are expecting the ASUS EEE PC T101H tablet netbook would also be worried because it wouldn't be released until Windows 7 launches in October.

Although recently CNET published that the HP company was provoked by Greenpeace in the cause of dangerous products contained in HP products, I really think this news breaking story wouldn't be a burden towards the sales of HP netbooks world wide.

In this article, I would like to review the HP Compaq Mini 110c. This product is actually based on the Compaq Mini 700, but differences are of course identified. The 110c looks cheaper because of its materials used. It has a coarser matte black plastic finish and no 'frameless' display. One upside is that the 10 in display has an anti-glare finish which is suitable for outdoor use.

The complete look is that this netbook seems sturdy enough and quite charming with its glossy lid. When you open the lid, you can see an interior with 92 per cent full-size keys that are comfortable to use

Unfortunately, the touchpad features buttons that would not appeal users because the buttons remain on either side. A strange arrangement but likely you could get used to it.

The hardware is pretty the same mainstream thing. It comes with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive and also get 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a webcam.

Connectivity is also similar, though this model does share the Mini 700's lack of a second audio jack, with just one port serving both headphones and microphones. The usual ports found are 3 USB ports, a VGA output, multi-format card reader and Ethernet port.

Audio visual of this HP Compaq Mini 110c netbook is much like most netbooks. While bright and sharp, the display is merely passable where colour production is concerned, while the speakers barely pass muster so you will need a good set of headphones.

The price is affordable and this netbook costs around $419. It's worth to know that Windows XP is the operating system. I think HP has produced a good netbook in the Compaq Mini 110c. The keyboard maybe the main advantage but it doesn't offer anything special compared to other netbooks flourishing the market.

Netbooks are bound to evolve into gadgets that are capable for advanced purposes. A new generation of netbooks will be named smartbooks and eventually be able to have instant-on functionality and persistent connectivity. Recently at the COmputex 2009 Expo, Freescale announced this concept and said that the smartbooks are cloud-computing-centric and characterized by all-day battery life.

As the smartbook category takes shape, Freescale has teamed up with industrial design programs to demonstrate possible next-generation form factors for smartbook devices. They are commonly powered by processors based on ARM technology, such as Freescale's i.MX515.

In my opinion, this smartbook looks like it will appeal customers with its fancy design. I hope it will be capable to play games like the PSP.

A prototype netbook has been built by Pegatron (a company which is subsidiary of ASUS). The new netbook developed is using the ARM Cortex A8 chip on its Freescale iMX515 CPU which is found on the Palm Pre smartphone. What is interesting is that the chip is clocked at 1GHz rather than the 600MHz in the Pre. If you notice the clock speed is lower compared to Intel Atom-powered netbooks but the Pegatron netbook's CPU is reported to be capable of playing back 720p HD movies and supporting 3D games.

What to expect of this netbook is the energy efficiency. It has a the two-cell battery that could last up to 8 hours, with a minimum of 4.5 hours. Other features are, the netbook have two USB ports, a VGA output and a memory card reader.

Asus has now announced the product and available to ship to consumers. The netbook is dissapointingly only shipping in Taiwan. No valid news was available why this product is not sold in other countries.

The netbook is quite expensive because it is sold for around $608. The high price compensate for its advance features such as a fingerprint scanner, 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU, X4500M graphics, 10.2-inch screen and 1GB of RAM.

On the first week in July, we received news that Sony will join the netbook market by releasing its own netbook called the Sony Vaio W. Specification showed that it doesn't differ from netbooks by other popular netbook brands.

The Sony Vaio W features 10.1-inch LED backlit widescreen display (1368 x 768-pixel resolution. The processor of this netbook is the 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N280 processor which includes a power-optimized front side bus of 533 MHz for faster data transfer on demanding mobile applications and a 512 KB L2 cache (which temporarily stores data).

Hard drive installed as much as 160 GB with memory of 1 GB of DDR2 RAM. Graphic processor is the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950. The Vaio W also has a webcam named the Motion Eye. Intex a Netbook from India

The AMD Neo platform was built to provide a relatively cheap and low power processor and GPU setup that would compete in the same level or probably offer better performance than Intel’s Atom platform. Currently there aren't any netbooks reported with Neo Processor but only in the notebook category (HP Pavilion dv2).

AMD Neo platform is known for its higher capacity in video processing, but the real truth is for day to day tasks like web browsing, most users won’t notice the difference between an Atom powered PC and one with the Neo chipset, but talking about battery life, many Atom powered netbooks last for 5 hours or more on a charge, and the Neo based platform reportedly gives up after just about 2.5 hours.

The battery life is probably why there aren’t any big name laptops powered by AMD’s Neo platform right now.

Consumers are now expecting the Apple rumor to come true because of predictions of Apple producing its first-ever netbook. There's even an expected release date to the unseen product and everybody should expect it on October.

Many people are still not sure because Apple is probably not working on a netbook. Rumors said that the new product by Apple is a tablet. Recently netbooks are gaining popularity, the netbook market is expected to see 33 million netbooks shipped this year. What people really like about netbooks are because they're cheap, compact and do what you need them to do.

In the Apple perspective, netbooks are probably not the right product to launch because we all know that Apple focuses on the higher end of personal computing and computing experience.

Although rumors still exist, we should probably refer to Steve Jobs himself who clarified Apple's stance on netbooks, essentially saying there's no chance Apple will do one, so stop the rumors before they start. According to CEO Jobs, Apple doesn't know how to build a $500 notebook that wouldn't be a glorified paperweight.

Apple will probably produce a new tablet-style netbook that will change the rules on netbook pricing, which typically hovers around $500 on the high end. Reports indicate that Apple's touch-screen tablet is going to hit the roughly $800 mark.

Netbooks Are Useful

I recently read an article by Mike McDonald, who said that the netbook existence is questioned, and Mike stated it was a useless ‘tweener’ device. In his perspective, netbooks are to small and have akward keyboards.

Answering the article by Mike, we should remember that the selling point of netbooks is low cost, not functionality. You can get a computer for less than $300 with everything you need to be connected, and serve almost all the computing needs a non power user would have.

If you are in an emerging market, you might not be able to afford a $1000 fully featured notebook or a 60$/month data plan for your phone, but you still want to be connected.

Most of the people who buy netbooks are not going to buy them as an extra device, they will buy them instead of a notebook. Don't forget that the positive point of netbooks are because of it's size and probably it's the only thing you have to carry. You could get 7.5 hours of battery life, not manufacturer battery life (they say 9.5), but 7.5 hours of doing real work.

Most netbooks aren't powerful enough for video editing, photoshop, or heavy music editing, so if that's a big or important piece of what you do then a netbook will be useless for you.

The Samsung NC10 has joined the ranks of 10-inch netbooks, including the Eee PC 1000H, MSI Wind, and Lenovo IdeaPad S10, and it beats them all. The $499 NC10 may have the same cookie-cutter specs as its competitors, including a 1.6-GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, and Windows XP, but its spacious, well-positioned keyboard and more than 6 hours of battery life make this system our favorite 10-inch netbook yet.

LG X110 3g Netbook

The X110 is based on the MSI Wind, but is far more than a simple rebadge like the Advent 4211. The entire chassis, including the keyboard and touchpad, have received a major overhaul and it's all for the better. Furthermore, its overall shape is now less curved and sleeker, and the plastics used feel slightly stronger. Unlike the logos on the Wind and Advent, the LG one is modestly positioned on the corner of the lid.

Another change is a small 'lip' on the lid's top edge that helps make the netbook easier to open up, revealing the re-styled interior. The power button now has a blue LED surround rather than the star-shape of its predecessors, and the curve has gone from the palm-rest, which is now even. The power and battery indicators have also been enlarged so that they're visible when the lid is closed, which is a useful touch.

As for the colour scheme, we're not overly enthusiastic about the white and off-silver 'champagne' combination. Thankfully, other options are available including black, white and pink. Despite sporting a high-gloss finish on the outside, our model's white exterior means fingerprints are only visible from certain angles - a good thing since no cleaning cloth is provided.

Aside from its shape, the biggest and most welcome physical change with the X110 concerns the keyboard. The Wind's implementation was good but its big annoyance was the Fn key residing to the outside of the Ctrl key. LG has remedied this, and has also moved down the cursor keys to not only allow a full-size right-shift key, but also dedicated Home and End keys to either side of the up-cursor. Shortcuts to volume and brightness have also been made more accessible as they are now secondary functions of the cursor keys.

Feedback is a bit on the light side but pleasant nonetheless, with a well-shaped key-surface. All of the above makes it one of the best netbook keyboards on the market, superior in layout if not in feedback to that of the Samsung NC10, though the excellent example on the HP Mini remains unmatched.

Likewise, the large touchpad is one of the better examples on the market. Design-wise it's perfectly integrated, featuring the exact same finish as the rest of the keyboard surround. The surface is just the right balance between textured and smooth, and the pad is incredibly sensitive. Both buttons are merged into a single bar, but unlike many such implementations it works perfectly as each end is easy to press and response is crisp.

Fujitsu LifeBook M2010 Netbook

Fujitsu has dabbled in ultra-ultraportable machines for a while now, having released the LifeBook U810 and U820 tablet PCs. Now the company is ready to take baby steps into the netbook market, with its M2010. To be honest, though, this isn't the bold move that Fujitsu should have--or could have--made.

Fujitsu's M2010, according to company spokespeople, is geared a bit more toward kids. While not exactly child-size, the machine's keys seem reminiscent of the keyboard on the 10-inch Acer Aspire One: a little on the smaller side, but with perfectly serviceable buttons. At least the arrow keys are large on the M2010. And you'll need them--though the touchpad has a nice, textured surface, its size is about average for a netbook. That's hardly a crime, but since we're seeing new netbooks (like the Toshiba NB205) crop up with larger touchpads, I'm greedy and I want to see more, if only for the sake of my aching hands.

Windows 7 Multi Touch Support for Netbooks

Touch is one of the most exciting, yet least discussed features of Windows 7. Although most people associate multi-touch features with Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch products, the idea has existed for years and Microsoft conceptualized multi-touch for the Microsoft Surface tabletop computer as far back as 2001. If you use an iPhone, then you already know how to use multi-touch. If you already own a netbook, you’ll want to hock it on Craigslist when the Windows 7 netbooks featuring multi-touch displays hit the market.

While most computers can benefit from the use of this technology, netbooks are a special case. First of all, their tiny keyboards and touchpads beg for a heavy dose of human-interface assistance. Additionally, the limited real estate afforded by their small screens is an obvious candidate for pinch-style zooming and for scrolling with a simple and intuitive flick of the finger.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said that "between indications from our component contacts in Asia, recent patents relating to multi-touch sensitivity for more complex computing devices, comments from Tim Cook on the April 22nd conference call, and Apple’s acquisition of P.A. Semi along with other recent chip-related hires, it is increasingly clear that Apple is investing more in its mobile computing franchise.

The market of netbook is still growing and Apple plans for their product release is becoming a reality. It won't come out as a cheap product like other generic netbooks. You should expect a premium product which will have touchscreen capability similar to the iPhone dan the iPod. and probably will resemble as a tablet computer.

Like the launch of iPhone, the possibility of this product to shake the mini portable computer is true and consumer from all around the globe will eventually want this product.

I've had mine for 3 days now, and it's been really hard to put down and walk away from. Obviously the portability of it is a big reason, but also because the 6 cell battery lasts so long that I feel like I can just leave it on for a while without feeling the need to keep powering it down or charging it all the time. Also, boot up and shutdown times are a lot faster than my regular laptop.

The build is very solid. There is no flex in the screen or keyboard. I'm not sure how it would hold up if dropped on a hard surface, though. I hope I never have to find out. Keyboard response is nice. The keys don't feel cheap or like they would snap off if more than a little pressure is placed on them. Keys are close to regular size so typing on it doesn't take much getting used to, if at all. The screen is highly reflective and the outer coating has a glossy finish, which I don't prefer because it leaves fingerprints too easily and makes it difficult to see the screen in the daylight. But I'm willing to live with this simply because the computer has so much else going for it.

This computer uses the 1.6 GHZ atom, which is the standard processor included with most ultraportables right now. I've noticed that I can run some moderately intensive software on it, but not smoothly for long periods of time. I tried loading some music software for which a 1.4 GHZ processor is recommended (Native Instruments Absynth 4), just to see how well it would run. I found that it was capable of operating, but it was easy to make the CPU spike if I played more than a few notes at once. Not that I was planning on using this a a music production tool, but I was interested in seeing what I could get away with in case I find myself stuck on an airplane or car trip with my Aspire One and a pair of headphones and want to play around with sounds a little bit. Native Instruments FM8 wasn't so processor intensive and operated much more smoothly. In short, I got about the best response I could have hoped for with the processor and soundcard included. Fairly functional for light doodling.

Windows Media Player 9 was included in the software bundle, so I decided to upgrade it to Windows Media Player 11. I don't know if this was such a smart move, as version 11 may be more resource hungry. I was playing some mp3's while simultaneously updating my music library and the program started hanging on me after about 20-30 minutes. I closed and reopened the program and resumed what I was doing and after 5 minutes, the program again started to hang. By this point, I decided I had been testing the limits of this system for quite a while and the processor was running pretty hot by this point, so I decided to turn it off and put it down for a while.

RAM-wise, it comes with 1 GB and is only expandable to 1.5. I've heard that it is difficult to reach the RAM slot and that it involves taking the computer apart, so I've decided that the marginal increase in memory is not worth the hassle, particularly since the limited processor would not allow you to run much, if any, software that would require more memory than you already have pre-installed in this little thing, so it seems like a moot point to add memory.

The 160 GB hard drive is probably the largest capacity hard drive currently shipping pre-installed in the world of ultraportable PCs, and so far i've only seen it in the latest Aspire Ones. It's the traditional 5400 rpm HDD notebook drive. I like the higher capacity because it means that this computer can double as an additional storage drive to back up files, music, photos, etc. I would not have this luxury if I bought one of the other models on the market with low capacity solid state drives.

I've read reviews of the older Aspire One model and it seems a lot of people had difficulty with the Wi Fi not finding an internet connection and also bios problems. I don't know if Acer addressed these issues in this newer model, but I have not experienced any problems with either so far. If I do, I'll update my review later. So far, this has been a great little toy. You just have to remember that it was not built for intensive computing or high performance, and manage your expectations accordingly.

According to a survey, Internet-optimized mini-laptops known as “netbooks” – which are emerging as attractive, low-cost devices that have drawn interest from such IT bigwigs as Apple and Verizon – likely will be deployed “on a selective basis” within the workforce, a Boston-based market research and consulting firm is reporting today.

I'd Actually Use a Netbook With Intel's Moblin 2.0 OS

Intel's Moblin 2.0 OS is designed specifically for netbooks, and marks the first time I've ever been tempted to utter "wow" and "netbook" in the same sentence. Just watch.

It's completely re-designed from the original Moblin. It's not just really modern and awesome looking, it seems like the first OS and UI really designed just for netbooks.

And it makes a lot of sense for netbooks to get their own OS and interface: Every hardware platform—which you can basically break down by screen size and input method, from desktop/laptop to mobile—works best with an OS and UI designed for it. It's why the iPhone OS, Android and Pre (theoretically) work so well when full-blown Windows running on UMPCs doesn't—they're designed to be mobile OSes, not simply a desktop OS stuffed onto a phone.

I sorta worry about Moblin being a bit limited since it's a custom OS, but Kevin says according to Intel, "thousands of applications" for Linux "just run" on it, no porting or middleware. If you're just using it as a web-oriented secondary machine, the light apps and WebKit browser should theoretically be just fine. ASUS Eee PC 1000HE NetBook Review

I have had the Eee PC 1000HE netbook for about a week now, and it has fulfilled my every expectation. Because I hadn't started up the Eee without installing the 2 GB RAM I'd purchased, this review is relevant to those who plan to upgrade, or have already upgraded the RAM in the unit. For those who don't, I will add that it is extremely easy and inexpensive to double the RAM of this netbook. I had never opened a laptop chassis before, and it took all of 5 minutes.

Pros:

Up front, the package is inexpensive. You definitely get the bang for your buck
Bright, brilliant screen with an excellent viewing angle.
Large, more comfortable keyboard; touch typing is incredibly easy to get used to.
Long battery life; I've had mine unplugged for over seven hours without a recharge.
Exactly the amount of power and speed that I need from a computer, I'm able to run some of my favorite games (GTA: San Andreas, UT2004, and Neverwinter Nights) without breaking a sweat, edit photos and stream videos through the wireless card.
The power-saving hotkeys are really useful. Most of the time I don't notice the difference between 'Power-Saving' mode and 'Super Performance' mode, which means for normal usage I'm saving a lot of battery life.

Cons:

The volume is a bit too low on the speakers, AND when I'm wearing headphones. I've opened up all of the volume adjusters at one point or another, and I can't increase the volume past a certain point. I could imagine this being very irritating on a long bus ride or a plane ride.
As really helpful the multi-touch pad is (and it truly is helpful), some of the presets are too closely linked to "scroll up and down". For example, I find myself opening a 'magnifying glass' one moment, and 'zooming out' of a webpage the next. I couldn't figure out why all my webpages were tiny. So disabling most of the multi-touch functions is probably a smart idea when you get started.
This is just a quibble, but the resolution of 1024 x 600 is so specific to a very small number of machines.
